How to download free stuff from the internet? - A quickie guide for bittorrent

This guide covers settings for a popular bittorrent client called Utorrent.

PORTFORWARDING

1. Firewall: open port 45678 TCP, and 45678 UDP.
In Windows Firewall
1.1 under Exceptions tab
1.2 click "add ports" (you can enter any name)

Skip unless you have a router
2. Router
2.1 set up a STATIC IP
2.2 note the manufacturer and find a guide here


UTORRENT

1.1 download Utorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/
1.2 open it
1.3 click Options, Preferences

2. General
2.1 Install IPv6
2.2 Append ut! to incomplete files -- tick

3. Directories
3.1 Put new downloads in -- tick
3.2 enter path where you want to download to

4. Connections
4.1 Port: 45678
4.2 other boxes are empty

5. Bandwidth
5.1 Use additional upload slots if speed is below <90% -- empty

6 Bittorrent
6.1 Everything ticked except:
6.2 Limit local peer bandwidth -- empty
6.3 Outgoing -- disabled

You can skip step 7- This helps you spare some upload bandwidth
7. Queuing
7.1 Ratio is -- 0
7.2 Seeding time is -- 0
7.3 Seeding tasks have higher priority -- empty
7.4 Limit upload rate -- tick and 0

8. Press OK

9. Options -> Speed Guide.
9.1 If you don't know your upload bandwidth, click "run speedtest"
9.2 Connection Type: second value is upload speed (kilobit and megabit, not kilobyte or megabyte!)
9.3 Current Port: 45678
9.4 Test if port is forwarded correctly
9.5 Use selected settings

If you get a green OK, everything's fine

You can skip step 10- This accelerates your download speed
10.1.1 Download a patch)
10.1.2 Open and enter: 100.
10.1.3 Add to tcpip.sys
10.1.4 In Utorrent: Options - Preferences - Advanced
10.1.5 net.max.halfopen
10.1.6 Value: 100
10.1.7 Set
10.1.8 OK
10.2.1 Download another patch
10.2.2 open it and set your upload speed on the slider
10.2.3 click "optimal settings"
10.2.4 Apply changes

SITES

www.isohunt.com
www.mininova.org
www.thepiratebay.org

DOWNLOADING

1. go to one of the above sites
2. search for something, as in Google
3. download a .torrent file
4. open the .torrent file with Utorrent
5. wait until download is finished
